Tall French Louis XVI Long Case Clock with Walnut Case & Brass & Enamel Dial, circa 1790

From the historically important city of Lyon, an impressive and well-proportioned eighteenth century Louis XVI long case clock in walnut with inlays. Arched bonnet over arched glass-paneled door opens to an enamel dial, reading "Martin a Lyon", surrounded by hand-hammered brass decoration in relief with references to a bountiful harvest: Flower-filled basket, acanthus leaves and cornucopias brimming with wheat. The emblem of Louis XIV, the sun king, crowns this grouping in brass. Has original hands tipped with sun emblems, another reference to the sun king, with painted Roman numerals over the enamel face, France, circa 1790.
