Overview

This exceptional armoire from the area of Bremen has the original pink gesso appliques. Armoire would have originally been painted in a faux bois mahogany and stenciled finish. Fabricated from a beautiful knot-less dense pine, the carved ribbed panels on the doors and drawers and the strong bracket feet are typical of the region. It is referred to as a "sun armoire" because of the gesso-decorated arched panels on the doors that radiate out from the center. The interior red painted finish is original, as well as the hardware, including the door lock and the bayonet bolts on the passive door. Doors have been put on pocket slides and interior is new consisting of center divider and six adjustable shelves. Northern Germany, circa 1800.
