Overview
14" wide x 14" deep x 32" high
A captivating depiction of Saint Roch (or San Roque) in carved and polychromed wood holding a staff and dressed in pilgrim's clothing, with a dog on one side and an angel on the other. The angel exposes a wound in his upper thigh, a reference to the buboes in his groin, which was the first sign of the bubonic plague. He was miraculously cured with the help of a dog that brought him bread every day after being expelled from the town and taking refuge in the forest. Early stories of this saint place him in the Languedoc, while others in various Italian cities, France or Italy, circa early 1700s.
