Overview

Measures: 7" wide x 3 1/4" deep x 6 1/4" high
Traditional Primitive Sidamo headrest with simple incised lines from the Sidamo people of Ethiopia. It is impossible to accurately date these objects without a provenance which is rare. Headrest are part of an ongoing tradition. We can only look at the patina and wear of the wood. It wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that this headrest is from the early 20th century or possibly older. Authenticity is more important than age, and the fact that objects show tribal use and purpose and were not made to sell. The Sidama live between Awasa town in the north and Dilla town in the south, spread out in a cone-shaped area of the middle of southern Ethiopia.

This Sidamo headrest is part of a formidable collection of African Art by an international collector now residing in Miami.
