Overview
A fine example of an American Federal drop-leaf table in West Indies mahogany, from New York, circa 1810. The solid rectangular top with curved drop-leaves features a beautiful figured grain and is supported by two solid standards in the lyre form with carved rosettes near the base. The legs, which are in the form of cyma curves and are grooved and embellished with carved palmettes, are joined by two turned stretchers and have the original brass lions paw feet with casters. The square apron showcases a play of woods with crotch mahogany on the frieze, inlaid bandings along the edge, and inverted finials on the corners. Offers one working drawer with original brass pull with an embossed dove on the plate holding a laurel branch in its mouth and the inscribed word "Peace", a rare & beautiful piece of hardware. Comes with working lock & key. Note: By design, the second key hole on the drawer side of table serves no function except to retain symmetry. The lock was offset presumably to avoid a keyhole in the pull. The Peace pulls are and were significant to the overall design of the table.
