Pair of Flemish "Chaufeusse" Chairs, circa 1860

A very lovely pair of "chaufeusse" chairs in mahogany with upholstered seat. Turned finials flank the fleur de lys carving on the crest, with beautiful vertical turnings on the back splat, front legs & stretcher. These chairs sit lower than a dining chair because they were used in front of the fireplace. Chairs like these were also used as landing chairs, affording a place to rest between levels. Belgium, circa 1860. Note: Chairs have been restored, and re-upholstered in muslim (a preliminary fabric).
